Construction work resumes
KATHMANDU, MAR 11 - Construction work at the Gatthaghar stretch of Tinkune-Suryabinayak road resumed on Wednesday afternoon after protesting locals and contractors struck a deal.
The road construction was halted since Monday after the locals of Nayabasti in Gatthaghar padlocked the site office Tinkune-Suryabinayak Road Construction Project at Madhyapur Thimi demanding construction of a link road to their villages.
Project officials and locals reached an agreement in the presence of Bhaktapur Chief District Officer (CDO) that the contractors will construct a black-tapped road to connect the highway with the project site office as the road passes through the village. .
The locals also urged project officials and the CDO to initiate dialogue with the government for the construction of roads connecting their village.
Though work has resumed, a project official refusing to be named said the project was responsible for constructing the main roads only and not the side roads as demanded by the locals. “People must understand this fact and should not make unnecessary demands,” said the official.
The six-lane road has been funded by the Japanese government and the contract was awarded to Japanese company, Hazma. Out of six lanes, Nepal government is responsible for the construction of two lanes, which will be used as service tracks and other four lanes will be express highway.
The project that began on Dec. 1, 2008 is supposed to be completed by March 2011.
The Japanese government provided approximately Rs. 1.77 billion for the construction of 9.1 kilometer highway.
