10 killed, 13 injured in Tanahu jeep plunge

TANAHU, MAR 11 - Ten people were killed and 13 sustained injuries when a jeep veered off the road and fell some 150 metres into a gorge at Setang of Kahun Shivapur VDC-3 in  Tanahu district on Wednesday, police said. The vehicle was en route to Tanahu district headquarters Damauli from Kahun Shivapur.

Eight people died on the spot, while two succumbed to injuries at Damauli Hospital.

Police identified the victims as Yogmaya Ale, Dundimaya Ale, Durga Bahadur Ale, Lalmaya Ale, Dillimaya Rimali, Dil Bahadur Ale, Tikamaya, Kalimaya Gyanimagar and Buddimaya Sinjali. Police could not establish the identity of a minor killed in the mishap. Most of the victims, according to police, are related. They had boarded the ill-fated vehicle to return home after attending a marriage ceremony.

Seven of the critically injured, including driver Nara Bahadur Thapa, were rushed to Pokhara for treatment. Five of the injured returned home after receiving treatment at the Damauli Hospital.

According to police, the vehicle was carrying passengers beyond its capacity along the gravelled road, which is about 10 km south of Damauli.

“The jeep was struggling to climb a steep section of the road. Next thing I know, I was thrown away on the ground. The jeep had fallen off the road into the gorge,” said Keshar Bahadur Ale, a survivor.
