KATHMANDU, MAR 11 - Police on Wednesday arrested at least 34 Tibetan protesters from different parts of the Capital while they were staging demonstrations.
The protesters were taken into custody after they tried to barge into prohibited areas, police said.
Hundreds of Tibetans in exile in Nepal staged demonstrations at Hattisar, Boudha and other areas to mark the 51st anniversary of the failed Tibetan uprising, after which the Dalai Lama fled to India. “Despite our requests, they hit the streets and started throwing plastic bottles at security personnel,” said DSP Govinda Ram Pariyar, chief of the Metropolitan Police Circle, Boudha. “We had to arrest them to maintain peace and security.”
According to DSP Pariyar, action will be initiated against them under the Public Offence Act for disrupting peace and security.
Large numbers of police personnel were deployed at sensitive areas like Boudha, Hattisar and the United Nations building at Hariharbhawan.
Local administration had directed security forces to stay on high alert in view of the demonstrations by Tibetans against China. As per Nepal’s ‘One-China’ policy, Nepal considers Tibet an integral part of China and does not allow any anti-China activitt on Nepali soil.
Nepal is home to about 20,000 Tibetans in exile, the first of them started arriving in the country after the failed uprising in 1959.
