SURKHET, MAR 11 -

Three persons--two women and a girl child --were killed when a team of Nepal Army (NA) personnel patrolling in Bardiya National Park (BNP) opened fired at a group of people, who the NA on Thursday said were poachers.

They are identified as Devisara BK, 35, Amrita BK, 33, and Chandrakala BK, 12. All of them are said to be residents of Hariharpur-2 in Surkhet.

The Directorate of Public Relations (DPR) said the team on Tuesday night opened fire at the "poachers in retaliation at Basbani where they were living setting up a camp." It said four others were held.

The DPR said the poachers attacked the patrol team first when it raided their camp inside the BNP.

Three home made guns, four rounds of bullet and explosives were recovered from the site which is about 30 km far from the district headquarters Gulariya.

According to locals, five persons -- three women and two men-- had gone inside the national park to collect herbs.
