KATHMANDU, MAR 08 - The police arrested another armed ‘gangster’ on suspicions of his link with media entrepreneur Jamin Shah’s killers on Saturday night. Acting on a tip-off, a police team deployed by the Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD) picked up Raju Gurung, also known as Raju Lama, from a dance restaurant in Putalisadak and subsequently raided his Manamainju-based rented accommodation, from where the police have impounded an Italian pistol, an Indian revolver and five bullets.

Sources said Gurung was also a member of the Balaju-based gang led by Maila Lama that had long been involved in ‘anti-social activities.’

During the interrogation, Gurung told investigators that one Krishna Lama of Hetauda (whose name has not been confirmed by investigators) had sold him the weapons.

The police had initially suspected that Gurung might have known Shah’s killers, including Deepak Shahi alias Babbu, who had executed Shah’s murder under the direction of Indian jailbird Babloo Shrivastav.

Earlier on Saturday, Kishor Khadka, another key aide of Babbu, had told investigators that one Raju Lama was also involved in Babbu’s gang members. But investigators later found that the arrestee Raju was not a part of the Babbu’s gang. The police have also been investigating whether he had any connections with the gang that shot at Nagender Pampati, managing director of an Indian-owned private medical college in Bharatpur. Pampati was shot at outside his Ranibari-based rented house on Tuesday but escaped unhurt.

As of Sunday evening, the police have not found any significant leads to other Kathmandu-based armed groups. Police have kept Gurung’s arrest a secret, and he will be tried  under the Arms and Ammunition Act. Senior Superintendent of Police Ganesh KC only confirmed the arrest and the seizure of weapons, but refused to comment further.
