Nepal upbeat for U-16

KATHMANDU, MAR 07 - After the success of the senior team in the ICC World Cricket League (WCL) Division 5, Nepal is now all set to carry the good result in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) U-16 Elite Cup, which will run through March 8-16 in Kathmandu.

With an entirely new set of players the task according to coach Roy Dias is not easy. “All the players in the team are new and they lack match practice,” Dias said, “This is a big event and the team that handles the pressure well will emerge winners.”

Having won all three U-15, U-17 and U-19 age group tournaments, Nepal has the additional pressure of maintaining the good result in the inaugural edition of the U-16.

ACC came up with the idea of merging the U-15 and U-17 tournaments into U-16 after it had difficulty in verifying the age of players in the U-15 and U-17 tournaments.

In the eight-nation tournament, Nepal is in group A along with Kuwait, Bahrain and Hong Kong, while group B consists of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Saudi Arabia.

As usual Nepal will rely on their bowlers. “With six fast bowlers and four spinners there is no problem with bowling,” said Dias talking about the team. “But the problem is with the batsman, who lack match practice. Unlike in the past, we had very little choice while selecting the squad.

Nepal had sent a list of 60 players to ACC for age verification test but only 18 got through. According to him, the competition would be tough as the other countries are also focusing on their youth development programmes.
