KATHMANDU, MAR 04 -

United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Chief Karin Landgren called on Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal at the latter’s official residence in Baluwatar on Wednesday.

The UNMIN has given positive gestures on providing the details on the Maoist combatants to the government, Prime Minister’s foreign affairs advisor Rajan Bhattarai said, informing about the meeting.

UNMIN’s such response comes at a time when the government and the UN body are at odds following the UNMIN refusal to provide details of the Maoist combatants.

During the meeting, PM Nepal requested Landgren to provide the fresh data saying that the UNMIN-issued identity cards of the Maoists’ fighters were mostly worn out and pictures were unrecognisable.

According to Bhattarai, PM Nepal told Landgren that the UNMIN’s data is crucial for the identification of genuine Maoist fighters as re-verification is not possible.

Landgren also informed the PM about the upcoming Nepal visit of the UN Deputy General Secretary.

The government has been requesting the UNMIN to provide the actual number Maoist combatants living in cantonment, saying that the budged allocated by the government for their salaries and allowances could be misused as all the disqualified combatants were not in the cantonments.

Earlier, the UNMIN had turned down the government request saying that it was against the Comprehensive Peace Accord.
