Hooked on cyberworld

KATHMANDU, MAR 04 - Technology makes life easier but it also can bring misery at times. It simply depends on how one uses it. Take Facebook for example.

It is one of the most surfed sites in the internet but there is no dearth of people hooked on it complaining, ‘it’s too much’.

“So addicted am I to Facebook that I am into it till late night,” says 18-year-old Lumanti Pradhan of Sattungal. “And I miss my morning classes the following day.”

Like youngsters, professionals too spend a good chunk of working hours Facebooking.

Mohan Ojha, Managing Director of Growth Seller, says employees at times let their work pile up as they wander around the cyber wonderland.

“If 20 staff waste an hour on social utility sites everyday, on average they will be wasting about 500 plus hours a month,” Ojha simplifies the arithmetic.

Some organisations have made effort to curb ‘overuse’ of websites. But where there is a will there is a way. “Sites like Facebook are blocked in my office but I know the trick,” chuckles a 25-year-old bank staff refusing to be named.

Sumaya Rai, a psychologist, says there is no harm using such sites, but stresses that users should be prudent.

“Teens need parental support. As for professionals, they should be reminded about work ethics,” she says.

Alexa—a website that keeps tabs on websites—has ranked Facebook as the second most visited site in Nepal after Google.

Cyberspace is a virtual world of utopia but what about spending more time in the real world.
