Two SC justices sworn in
KATHMANDU, MAR 03 -
Chief Justice Anup Raj Sharma administered oath of office and secrecy to two permanent Supreme Court justices Mohan Prasad Sitaula and Ram Bahadur Bom on Wednesday at a function in the apex court.
Earlier in the day, the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) had endorsed the Judicial Council's recommendation for appointment of the two judges as permanent Supreme Court (SC) justices. Sitaula and Bom have served as temporary justices at the apex court for over one year. The Judicial Council had recommended the names to the PHSC on Feb. 18.
PHSC is a parliamentary body authorised to conduct hearing prior to appointment of any member of constitutional bodies, ambassadors and other important government officials. There were no complaints lodged against both Sitaula and Bom.
During the hearing, both Sitaula and Bom pointed out that the judiciary has not been able to function to its fullest capacity due to lack of cooperation from the police administration. They said that the unscientific system of carrying out investigations after taking suspects into custody is one of the most important weaknesses in the country's criminal justice system.
