KATHMANDU, MAR 03 - Nepal Telecom (NT) is formulating a "quality policy" to improve the quality of its GSM mobile service in response to criticism about the quality from subscribers.

"It will help us to make our quality management and maintenance work effective," said NT spokesperson Surendra Prasad Thike. He said that the policy would also help to carry out preventive maintenance work and monitor and revise the quality management system effectively which will enable NT to offer quality service.

Following constant complaints from the consumers, the Public Accounts Committee had also directed NT to submit a work plan within 15 days to enhance the service quality.

"We have already submitted a work plan, and we will be carrying out our quality enhancement work accordingly," said Thike. He added that they were speeding up the installation of base tower stations (BTS), RF repeaters and batteries as required in various places.

According to the work plan submitted to the Public Accounts Committee by NT, upgrading the service quality by increasing the traffic holding capacity of BTS, installation of RF repeaters and setting up 516 BTS within the current fiscal year in the necessary areas are some of the major efforts to be undertaken for ensuring quality service.

Since radio frequency optimization is important for increasing the coverage, capacity and quality service, NT is also planning to enlarge the present team to make its optimization and drive test work more effective.

NT said that after the experiences gained from part years, it had already started the process to install alternative power back-up having a capacity to supply electricity for 10-12 hours to 200 BTS. Similarly, it has already installed solar chargers at more than 65 BTS for charging the batteries.

According to NT, it has also been trying to reduce the impact of load-shedding in the Kathmandu Valley by using an alternative for power back-up. During power cuts, around 20-25 BTS don't work properly.
