KATHMANDU, MAR 02 - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Sujata Koirala has assured UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay that human rights will continue to remain at the centre of the peace process. She also assured that the government is committed to protection and promotion of human rights in Nepal.

Koirala conveyed the message during a meeting with Pillay after her address to the 13th session of the Human Rights Council on Monday, according to a press statement by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN in Geneva.

During the meeting, Pillay also inquired about the government's stand on the renewal of mandate for her Office in Nepal. In response, Koirala said the matter is under active consideration of the government and an appropriate decision on this would be taken after necessary consultations with stakeholders in due time.

Earlier on Monday, Koirala briefed the high level segment of the Council about the government's efforts to promote human rights and end impunity. She asked the international community to extend positive support to help Nepal lead the peace process to a conclusion while stressing that "the temptation to selectively use human rights for political expediency must be discouraged and avoided." Koirala said, "We are committed to strike a necessary balance between peace and justice, and are fully conscious of our responsibilities and role in national efforts to protect and promote human rights."

During the 13th session of the Council, Koirala also met with the UK Minister of State for Africa and the United Nations, Baroness Glenys Kinnock who said that the British government attaches high importance to the work of the OHCHR in Nepal and expressed hope that this would provea useful aspect of international engagement.
