BAJURA, MAR 02 -

Thirty percent children in Bajura district have not received prophylactic vaccines due to lack of health workers.

According to the District Public Health Office (DPHO), the health centres in Toli, Huni, Rugin, Bichhya and Badhu VDCs have the largest number of children, who have not been vaccinated.

A child is supposed to receive seven types of vaccines by age five.  “In some places, we have assistant health workers administering vaccines to the children, but that does not cover all the children. The vaccination campaign has left behind 30 percent children,” said Dr. Gunaraj Awasthi, the DPHO chief. The left-out children are vulnerable to various diseases.

As part of the government's free vaccination programme, which aims to bring down child mortality rate, rural health workers are supposed to make door-to-door visits and set up temporary vaccination centres for vaccinating children against various diseases.  “It has been years since vaccination was launched in these VDCs,” said Dr. Awasthi.
