Act governing private schools sought
KATHMANDU, FEB 28 - Private and Boarding Schools’ Organisation (PABSON) and National Private and Boarding Schools’ Organisation (N-PABSON) have urged the government to devise a separate education policy to regulate private educational institutions.
The organisations’ call comes on the eve of their general convention.
Speaking at a programme in Kathmandu, office-bearers of the two organisations said the existing Education Act lacks provisions governing the operation of private educational institutions.
"Though private educational institutions have contributed a lot to the country’s education sector, they have come under much criticism for producing manpower suitable for foreign job markets only," said Bhoj Bahadur Shah, the PABSON president.
Referring to the changing political landscape, N-PABSON General Secretary Karna Bahadur Shahi said it’s high time the government introduced a clear and separate policy to prevent unhealthy competition among private educational institutions.
Educationist and National Planning Commission member Tirtha Raj Khaniya maintained that the government should bring private schools under a broader legal framework and see to it that laws governing these institutions are implemented fully.
"The state has to be clear on why we need private educational institutions and devise plans to regulate them," added Khaniya.
Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Education Janardan Nepal said the ministry is going to revise the existing Education Act in keeping with changing political scenario and is planning to have a separate chapter for governing private educational institutions in the Education Regulation rather than in the Act.
