Two Pakistanis held with 5.5 kg brown sugar
KATHMANDU, FEB 27 -
Police on Friday night arrested two Pakistani nationals and confiscated 5.5 kg of brown sugar from their possession in Kathmandu. The contraband is worth over Rs. 30 million in the international drug market.
Acting on a tip-off, a special police team raided Khanson Guesthouse in the Capital, and rounded up 41-year-old Abrar Hussain and 33-year-old Irshad Muhammad along with the contraband. Police also impounded USD 1100, Pakistani currency 120 and Nepali currency totaling Rs. 3,910 from their possession.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the duo are drug mules and they ferried the contraband from the Pakistani city of Karachi, under the direction one Pakistani drug smuggler Aslam, according to Superintendent of Police Ganesh KC, in-charge of Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka.
Investigations revealed that they had arrived in the Capital via Pakistani Airlines on Feb. 22, evaded the airports' screening and stayed in the guesthouse's room 104 since then.
Contrary to criminal's past modus operandi of concealing the drugs in false bottom of baggage, the duo said to have concealed the drug in their bodies and easily evaded the airport examinations.
But investigators, who have cast their achievement as a major blow to the international drug traffickers, could not trace the members of the Kathmandu-based drug racket who were meant to receive the drug.
"A manhunt has been launched to nab rest of the drug smugglers," said SP KC.
In a usual trend, according to SP KC, the drug syndicate had used the Capital as a transit point to smuggle the narcotic to the west countries, possibly American countries where the cost of the drug shoots up when it reaches there.
Investigators said this was not the first attempt of the Pakistanis to smuggle the drug. In the first week of January, the police also made arrest of two Pakistanis -- Mohammad Sajjat and Mohammad Iqbal -- with 3.7 kg of brown sugar from Thamel-based guesthouse.
