KATHMANDU, FEB 25 -

The government on Thursday promoted five joint secretaries to the post of secretary.

A cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister's Office in Singha Durbar today promoted joint secretaries Shitalbabu Regmi, Bimal Wagle, Mahendra Prasad Shrestha, Madhav Ghimire and Ananda Pokharel to secretary.

The cabinet, however, has not issued their posting order.

Likewise, the government also directed the Foreign Ministry to manage the Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) before the April 1 deadline as the government is supposed to implement the MRP system.

Earlier today, the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had directed the government to hand over the contract to print the MRPs on competition basis instead of granting it to an Indian press as proposed by Foreign Minister Sujata Koirala.

Meanwhile, the cabinet also formed a seven-member committee under the coordination of Peace Ministry to study the Maoist combatants who had left the cantonments and the condition at the cantonments.
