‘A’ division football: NTSC, MMC manage narrow wins
KATHMANDU, FEB 24 - Powerhouse Nabil Three Star Club (NTSC) and Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) had to dig in deep to begin their Martyrs' Memorial San Miguel 'A' Division League campaign with wins at the Dashrath Stadium on Tuesday.
French national Jocelyn Moran Pierce got off the mark as NTSC edged Rani Pokhari Team (RCT) 1-0, while MMC enjoyed a narrow 1-0 win over Sankata Kathmandu Mall Club with Ganesh Khadka’s strike.
Pierce scored his first in NTSC's shirt in any competition on 74th minute to end RCT's dominance in the game. For the goal, Pierce made full use of a well worked pass from Bijay Gurung, who dribbled past two defenders before supplying the pass.
RCT were close to scoring several times in the game with their first real chance coming on the half-hour's mark from Rishi Rai's left footed shot. Santosh Gurung then saw his well taken free-kick from about 22 yards out cruelly denied by the cross bar three minutes after the interval. RCT coach Madhu Karki rightly blamed the loss on the missed opportunities. “We had better control of the game but could not bag all three points due to the missed chances.” His counterpart Bal Gopal Maharjan accepted that RCT were a tough side but he expressed his confidence that NTSC would improve as the tournament progresses. “My boys have not been able to adjust in the game. Once they do, we will definitely have a better performance than today.”
Earlier, in the first match of the day, both MMC and Sankata boosted their lineup with foreign singings. Thamel based MMC had three Koreans - Cho Won Suk, Lee Jihoon and Kim Sun Do - all from Korean universities, while Sankata had goalkeeper Nurkul Karim and Mohammad Adif Hussain from Bangladesh.
But it was ANFA boy Ganesh Khadka who scored the all important goal for MMC on 63rd minute but with a little help from his Korean team mate Lee Jihoon, who reacted quickly to pass a lose ball parried by Sankata keeper Karim from Jagjeet Shrestha's shot.
