HIV-infected teacher commits suicide
DOTI, FEB 22 -
An AIDS patient committed suicide in Doti district. He had been hiding his disease from everyone, including his family members.
Haribhakta Poudel (name changed), a teacher at Chaukham Lower Secondary School at Ladagada, jumped off a bridge to death on Friday. Before killing self, he left a suicide note, saying that he was battling HIV/AIDS and kept everyone around him in shadow. “I, being tired of living a depressed life, resorted to suicide,” the suicide note read.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Mukesh Singh at the District Police Office Doti said Poudel, who hails from Nawalparasi, used to remain down in the dump most of the time fearing that his wife might had contracted the disease. In his note, he has asked his wife to get tested for HIV.
Poudel’s son said over telephone that his father looked tense during his last home visit. “He was anxious. But he did not share the problem with us.” he said.
Mahendra Shrestha, chief at District Public Health Office, Doti, said majority of HIV-infected people undergo depression as they are worried of social implications attached to an AIDS patient. “They hardly tell other people that they are AIDS
patients, which is very dangerous to a patient’s psyche.”
