KATHMANDU, FEB 19 - A day after CPN-UML central committee members gave thumbs up for Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal for hardening his stance on Maoists, some members close to Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal expressed their dissatisfaction with the recently formed High-Level Political Mechanism (HLPM) and its working style.
Commenting on Khanal’s political document on Thursday, they smelt a rat, suspecting that the formation of HLPM might be to topple the government.
“The HLPM was formed in an illegal and unconstitutional way. The UML has not formally permitted the leadership to form the mechanism,” said Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, a central committee member.
“The elite panel should have been formed under the coordination of the Prime minister. However, Madhav Kumar Nepal is just an invitee member,” Dhakal said.
The Maoists and Nepali Congress (NC) have reason to root for the HLPM, according to Dhakal. “The Maoist leaders are saying that its sole function is to topple the government, while the NC is waiting to lead the government. Hence, the HLPM has become a platform to hatch conspiracies.”
Leaders who remain absent during several meetings of the Constituent Assembly are hatching conspiracy to make the people’s elected body defunct in name of HLPM, Dhakal added.
UML central members demanded that either the HLPM be dissolved or formed under the PM’s leadership. However, the pro-establishment members have stressed on the need of expanding the mechanism by incorporating representatives from other parties.
CC members also supported Khanal’s reservation on the State Restructuring Committee’s proposal of having 14 ethnic federal states. Khanal has said that such a proposal would invite complexities.
Earlier, the UML’s last politburo meeting had given go-ahead to form the mechanism to conclude the peace process and the new constiution drafting process.
