Climate change a common concern: PM Nepal
KATHMANDU, FEB 15 - Prime Minister Madhav Nepal Monday said climate change accelerated by greenhouse gas emissions has become a matter of common concern.
Inaugurating a workshop on “Climate Change: Copenhagen Conference” organised by Nepal Intellectual Council and Federation of Community Forest Users of Nepal (FECOFUN), Nepal said uncontrolled emission of greenhouse gases by developed countries have put developing countries like Nepal at the receiving end even though they have no or little contribution to greenhouse gas emission.
Global warming has led to widespread snow-melting and affected agriculture, water resources and biodiversity, Nepal said, adding that the effects of climate change cannot be eliminated but they can be reduced.
Tough much was expected at the Copenhagen Conference towards tackling climate change impacts, the conference could not reach any concrete decision towards that direction due to the interests of different developed and developing countries, the prime minister said. But whatever decisions the conference took, they were a step forward, he said.
He said Nepal had done some homework before attending the conference but it was realized at the conference that the homework was not sufficient. He blamed it on the lack of coordination among different agencies/authorities working in the sector.
Member of National Planning Commission and general secretary of Nepal Intellectual Council Dr Dinesh Chandra Devkota highlighted the lessons learnt from the Copenhagen Conference.
Chairman of FECOFUN Ghana Shyam Pande said the conference has opened doors for development of developing countries and it could be an opportunity for Nepal.
