Foreign hand in Shah killing: Info minister
RAJBIRAJ, FEB 15 - Minister for Information and Communications Shanker Pokharel said on Monday that media entrepreneur Jamim Shah's murder was the work of some 'international force'. Pokharel, speaking at the anniversary of Chinnamasta FM, said the government has taken threats issued to the Kantipur Publications for its coverage of Shah's killing seriously.
"The government is concerned about the issue. It will do all it can for the security of the country's media sector," said the government spokesperson.
He took the occasion to defend the country's security apparatus, which has come under fire in the wake of the killing.
"It's true our security mechanism is weak, but Jamim Shah was not murdered because of that," he claimed. Some international force is behind the killing, he said without elaborating.
Pokharel blamed political instability for a fledgling security situation, adding that the government is making efforts to improve the situation.
The information minister said the country's media has progressed a lot due to a liberal media policy. He praised FM and radio stations for playing a crucial role in the success of the Janandolan II and Madhes Movement.
Pokharel said the government is planning to introduce a policy that will prohibit a company from operating more than one station, that too with a transmitter system below the 1,000-KW range.
