BIRATNAGAR, FEB 11 - UCPN (Maoist) leader CP Gajurel Thursday said the new constitution can be drafted within seven days if political parties forge consensus.

We can meet the May 28 deadline if parties agree on the main points that are remaining as a bone of contention, he said today speaking at a press meet organised by Revolutionary Journalists’ Association, Morang.

He said his party wants to write the constitution that would institutionalise “people’s federal republic”.

“Formation of a new government under the Maoist leadership will pave the way for promulgating the constitution within the stipulated timeframe,” he said. “Even if the constitution was not drafted on time, the sky won’t fall.”

While mentioning that the Maoists are committed to promulgate the statute on May 28, he said the rumour that the country will be declared a failed state if failed to write the constitution on time is wrong.

“The President’s statement that except him all bodies will be defunct if not drafted the constitution on time is a conspiracy to impose presidential rule,” he said.

On army integration, he said his party showed maximum flexibility by helping to release the UNMIN-disqualified People’s Liberation Army fighters. “But other parties are not serious on army integration.”

Flaying the remarks of the Defence Minister on army integration, he expressed concern over the use of army management instead of army integration by the Nepali Congress.

Referring to the agitation that his party has launches, Gajurel said, “We are not protesting against India, neither we are trying to anger Indian people.”

The Maoist leader also said the murder of Jamin Saha is due to security lapse.
