Rainfall brings cheer to Parbat farmers, snowfall hits Gorkha
GORKHA, FEB 09 - Farmers in Parbat have a reason to smile. Rain has brought cheers in several parts in the district.
Farmers deprived of irrigation facility would not have to live in fear of poor harvest of winter crops, thanks to the incessant rainfall in the district. Moderate to heavy downpour hit the district on Monday night and Tuesday.
Rainfall in most parts of the district has raised hopes of farmers into wheat, potato, barley, mustard and buckwheat farming. Sowing of maize delayed due to lack of rainfall will also start soon.
"If the rainfall was delayed by few days, this year's maize sowing would have badly affected. Now the rain has changed the scenario. I will soon start sowing," said Bijaya Sapkota, a farmer of Parbat Thulipokhari-2.
On the other hand, the rain has increased cold in the district, reducing public movement. Some shops have remained closed and vehicular movement is thin.
Meanwhile, northern hilly areas of Parbat have witnessed snowfall. Rural villagers, who blamed climate change for delayed snowfall and rainfall, have heaved a sigh of relief with the rainfall bringing hope of sowing.
Likewise, normal life in the northern belt of Gorkha including Samagaun, Sirdibas, Bihi, Prok, Lho, Chhekampar, Laprak and Barpak has been hit hard due to snowfall.
It is learnt that VDC secretaries who went to the northern part for the village council meeting have started coming down saying it has been difficult to hold the meeting after the snowfall. The meeting has been scheduled for February 11.
Bal Bahadur Pantha, secretary of Sirdibas VDC said they have decided to go up and hold the meeting after the less snowfall.
With an increasing cold in the northern belt of the district, the southern belt has witnessed heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall since Tuesday morning has affected the normal life in the southern part, too. However, the rainfall brings happiness among the farmers in this area. The rainfall occurred during the season of the summer crops plantation will be beneficial for farmers, said Buddhi Bahadur Thapa, senior agricultural development officer at the District Development Office, Gorkha. Crops production in the district had decreased last due to lack of timely rainfall, he added.
