Five Tibetans held in Kathmandu ahead of Rawal's visit
KATHMANDU, FEB 06 - Police arrested five Tibetans, including a woman, from three Bouddha-based hotels in the Capital on Friday.
Police said the arrestees did not possess travel documents. The arrestees, according to police, are a woman named Tsering Dolma and four men--Sonam Tharchen (35), Lobsang Tashi (22) Lobsang Tsondru ( 27) and Rigzin (24).
The group is believed to have gone to Bodhgaya, where the Dalai Lama presided over a five-day religious discourse last month.
Deputy Superientendent of Police Govind Pariyar said the Tibetans have been handed over to the immigration authorities and now face either deportation to Tibet or India or imprisonment in the country.
China has been putting pressure on Nepal to take harsh action against Tibetans. Nepal is home to around 20,000 exiled Tibetans, who began arriving in large numbers in 1959 after the Dalai Lama fled Tibet after a failed uprising. Nepal has upheld Beijing's One-China policy that views Tibet as an integral part of China.
