KATHMANDU, FEB 05 - The Metropolitan Police Sector, Bungmati, destroyed a huge quantity of illegally-brewed alcohol on Thursday.

At least 1,500 litres of alcohol were destroyed at the police station premises in the presence of journalists, social activists and political leaders. The alcohol had been seized from different parts of Sainbu VDC in the last seven days.

“We warned the villagers to stop brewing alcohol but they didn’t pay attention to our warnings,” said Sub-inspector Lok Raj Pathak, chief of the sector.

Damodar Khadka, a local resident, said, “The work of the police is admirable.”

The raid against home-brewers was part of a campaign to reduce crime in the area. The Bungamati police have also launched a siren service, regular checking, and registering the data of the people living in the area.

“We keep records of the people--owner and the tenants--from their personal details to professional details,” said Pathak. However, the service is on a trial basis for now.

The villagers are happy with the police campaign. “We were very impressed when police personnel came to our homes and asked our problems,” said Devendra K.C., resident of Sainbu-3. According to him, there hasn’t been any robbery in the area in the last six months. “We feel very secure,” he said.

Pathak also said that the police have been conducting awareness programmes in schools about negative effects of drug addiction.
