Cops under strain

DANG, FEB 02 - The police force in this district is stretched too thin. With one cop for every 712 people, the force is finding it hard to fight crime.

“The district’s population has gone up significantly, but strength of the police force has not changed for the last 10 years,” according to Inspector Janak Bahadur Shahi. “Crime is on the rise and we do not have enough personnel for effective policing.” The last few years have seen a mushrooming of criminal outfits equipped with modern weapons and the police force, laments Shahi, doesn’t have enough strength to fight these groups.  According to the Crime Investigation Branch of the District Police Office, the number of crimes has gone up staggeringly this year.

Last year, only 354 cases were recorded, while in the last six months, the district witnessed more than 200 grave crimes that claimed 64 lives.
