Kathmandu, Feb 01 - The ruling parties on Monday called the main opposition UCPN (Maoist) not to use the People's Liberation Army fighters residing in the UN-monitored cantonments combatants in any programme that will be organised to mark the 14th anniversary of the People's War.

"The combatants are now under the chain of command of the government. So we call the Maoists not use them to mark the anniversary of the people's war," said Minister for Information and Communication Shankar Pokharel after the meeting.

The ruling parties met after a day the Special Commiittee on Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants endorsed the directives related to the new chain of command in the PLA. The endorsement, in principle, brought the former rebels under the chain of command of the government.

The PLA was set to organise march pass and parade at different cantonments to celebrate the anniversary, and Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal was scheduled to inaugurate the sports week organised by the PLA Sports Club in Kathmandu on Feb. 13.

The former rebel party celebrates Falgun 2 (Feb. 14 this year) as the People’s War Day, to commemorate the start of the decade-long armed struggle against the state.
