SAG Hockey: India tame Nepal by 21-0 goals
DHAKA, JAN 30 - Nepal’s second international hockey outing in the South Asian Games (SAG) grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
In Saturday’s group games at Moulana Bhasani Hockey Stadium, world powerhouse India inflicted a 21-0 damage to Nepal scoring a goal in almost every three minutes.
India went ahead just four second into the game and were 10 goal ahead in the first half. The hapless Nepali side, which had last competed in the hockey 15 years ago in the Seventh South Asian Games in Madras in 1995, could only watch in frustration as India bulldozed forward making a goal attempt in every attack.
The unprepared Nepali side, playing in an artificial turf only since the last 15 days, could not give the score line a better reading in their second encounter against India after losing 18-0 back in 1995.
Nepal team manager Nar Bahadur Chand said the score line was not as bad as they had expected. “It’s only been 15 days since we started playing in an artificial turf. What more can we expect,” he said.
When asked about deteriorating scoreline, Chand said the team had to beg for training grounds with schools in Kathmandu as the hockey association does not own a ground.
Nepal had trained in an artificial turf in Lucknow just 15 days before coming to Dhaka. They now take on world champions Pakistan in the next fixture. The last time the two countries played was in Madras in 1995 with Pakistan thrashing them 24-0.
