DHAKA, JAN 30 - Injured Nepali judoka Debu Thapa undergoing treatment at the Square Hospital in Dhaka has expressed her willingness to compete in her event slated for Sunday.   Thapa along with nine other Nepali players had sustained injuries in an elevator mishap at the Imperial Hotel on Friday. On the day of the incident, Nepali officials had widely circulated that Thapa would miss the event but the doctors attending to her on Saturday have given her green signal for participation.

“I will try and compete in the event. The doctors here have told me I can compete,” said Thapa, showing her shoulders where she had received injuries.

Former South Asian Games silver medalist Thapa is in the best of form this time. She is confident she can win any medal even at this stage. The trainings she had undergone with Indian athletes before coming to Dhaka has made her a tough nut, she believes.

“I have worked hard for this day. I had not worked this rigorously for even the Olympics,” she added.

During the time of incident, Debu, tipped by many to win the gold in her category, was in tears not because of the pain but had fears she would miss the event she had trained for almost four months.

Nepal and India are considered to be the powerhouse in judo in South Asia and a medal of any kind is almost confirmed for Nepal.

Meanwhile, the two other athletes – Kalu Man Tamang and Ramesh Magar, who had sustained serious injuries, have no hopes of competing.

Kalu had tore his knee ligament and scheduled to under go an operation today, while Magar suffering from the same case as Kalu has his operation on Sunday.
