DOHA (QATAR), JAN 24 - If the claim made by the officials at Nepali Embassy in Saudi Arabia is to be believed then many Indian women are working in this gulf country as domestic help under Nepali identity and passports.
The Embassy found out about Indian women using Nepali passports to land maid's job in Saudi Arabia following the death of one Keshmaya BK of Baglungpani VDC-4 in Lamjung district. When the embassy officials called a number that BK had recorded in her diary, it was revealed that she was not a Nepali national. Her real name was Aitidevi Subba and she hailed from Siliguri town of West Bengal state in India.
Khadga Prasad Dahal, first secretary at the Riyadh-based embassy, said Aitidevei either forged the passport or bought it from its real holder.
"We don't know for sure how she got a Nepali passport, but if she entered the country this way then I won't be surprised if there are other Indian women working here as Nepalis," he said.
The embassy suspects that Indian women masquerade themselves as Nepali citizens and enter Saudi Arabia as the Indian government prohibits its women from going to the country to work as domestic help.
Nepali government also proscribe women from going to the gulf countries to work there as maids and housekeepers. However, many Nepali women find their way to the gulf countries. They usually board flight to the gulf countries from India as the ban enforced by the Indian authorities is not applicable to Nepali citizens.
It was found that Aitidevi, who arrived in Saudi Arabia a year ago, had boarded flight from Mumbai, India. Since Aitidevi bore a Nepali passport, the embassy could not ship her body to India, her homeland. Instead the embassy has decided to fly the body to Kathmandu.
Meanwhile, dead body of one Manjudevi Jhagad from Mrigauliya VDC-5 of Morang district has been kept in a hospital here in an unclaimed state for more than five months now. The embassy suspects if Jhagad had arrived to Saudi Arabia in someone else's passport as well.
