Importance of IT discussed
KATHMANDU, JAN 17 - Information Technology (IT) Conference, a part of CAN Info-Tech, kicked off on Saturday which aims to discuss use of information and communication technology (ICT) for country's economic development.
The participations are discussing on the theme 'Next IT Economy: A Future Talk,' according to Computer Association of Nepal (CAN), the organiser of the event.
On the first day of conference, participants underscored the need for achieving the economic development by boosting up the ICT sector which would help reduce poverty in the country ultimately.
"The contribution of Nepali ICT in national economy is insignificant," said Mahonar Bhattarai, vice president of High Level Commission for Information Technology (HLCIT). "Indian ICT sector is contributing 7 or 8 percent to GDP." Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Bhattarai said even one percent contribution to the economy would be a big achievement.
According to Bhattarai, all the countries that are developed or developing at a faster pace have gained high contribution from ICT. Ram Hari Aryal, secretary at the Ministry of Science and Technology said despite certain growth in ICT, its reach to rural areas was very limited.
During the first day of the conference, 13 paper on various issues related to ICT sector were presented. IT professionals and participants from various areas of the sector discussed on information security and legal issues, e-business and its growth, open source and role of ICT in climate change on Saturday.
"Tomorrow we will be holding conference through the medium of video conference from the U.S.A and Korea alongside other paper," said Suresh Karna, president CAN.
