DHADING, JAN 13 - UCPN (Maoist) Vice Chairman Baburam Bhattarai has said India encroached Nepali land in Susta of Nawalparasi and some other areas too.

Talking to reporters in Benighat, Dhading, on Tuesday, he said the Indian side encroached “around 14,000 hectares of land” in Susta alone. “After the Narayani River changed its course, the Nepali territory was encroached upon by India,” the former finance minister said.

Bhattarai was on his way to the capital after inspecting the disputed border area in Susta as a part of the party’s fourth phase of agitation.

Asked whether the Maoists have taken the issue of national independence and sovereignty as a political weapon, the Maoist leader said his party had raised the issue even before starting the decade-long people’s war. “Our party chairman (Prachanda) highlighted the issue during his India visit while he was the prime minister,” he said.

In another context, Bhattarai said the rumour of proposing him as the new prime minister of Nepal by India holds no weight.
