DOTI, JAN 12 - A statistics suggest remote Doti district consume more liquor than food. A recent study conducted by the Doti chapter of Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCI) showed that a monthly liquor transaction in the district is of Rs.22.5 million while of food Rs.19 million.
The consumption of liquor was found high in the places like Dipayal, Siligadi, Gopghat and BP Nagar. There are many hotels in these areas and their major source of profit is alcohol and food.
"There is no bigger misfortune for Doti than this," Birendra Shah, the CCI chairman, said.
Only the southern region of Doti have some crop production thus the people in the rest parts are compelled to buy their food. The consumption of food is very little despite the case.
A shopkeeper in Dipayal said he sells more alcohol than foodstuff at his shop. Six alcohol dealers in the district alone collect over Rs.20 million a month, he added.
Parshuram Regmi, District Traffic Office in charge, said the vehicle entry register to Dipayal shows that more vehicles freighting liquors ply along the highway than the ones carrying foodstuff.
Some liquor vendors at Dipayal and Siligadi even said that their items are even sold in the neighbouring Achham district, where alcohol is banned.
