Maj. Basnet repatriated under pressure: UN
KATHMANDU, JAN 08 - The United Nations has said that the unilateral decision to repatriate Maj. Niranjan Basnet from the UN peacekeeping mission in Chad was made amid mounting pressure from the international human rights organisations.
The statement came during a meeting on Dec. 18 between Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations Department of Peacekeeping Operations, Edmund Mullet and Deputy Permanent Representative of Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN in New York Shankar Bairagi.
At the meeting Mullet indirectly said the UN repatriated Maj. Basnet without any consultation with the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN due to the pressure.
While conveying government's concern over the unilateral decision, Bairagi had requested the UN through Mullet for a prior consultation with the concerned troop contributing country while making decisions on sensitive issues.
