UNMIN welcomes HLPM formation
KATHMANDU, JAN 08 - The United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) on Friday welcomed the formation of the High Level Political Mechanism (HLPM), a forum dedicated to multi-party dialogue on peace process-related issues.
Top leaders of the major three political parties earlier today formed the much-anticipated HLPM under the leadership of Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala.
In a statement issued by UNMIN Chief Karin Landgren today, the UN body said the establishment of the HLPM comes at a time when consensus among the parties is vital for securing the critical steps in the process—timely drafting of the new constitution and taking the peace process to a logical end.
“The United Nations Security Council in its resolution 1879 (July 2009) encouraged renewed and sustained efforts to create a unified approach among the political parties, including through such a mechanism,” noted the statement.
Expressing its readiness to assist the parties in achieving their objective, the UNMIN hoped that this newly set up forum will bring fresh momentum to the peace process.
