Govt offices continue to stay shut in Kailali

DHANGADI, DEC 28 - Even as the UCPN (Maoist) lifted its indefinite banda in Kailali on Saturday, continued closure of district-based government offices has affected the service-seekers.

Transportation and marketplaces resumed from Sunday, but government offices have remained closed for the last three weeks owing to Maoist threat. Closure of offices that cater essential services, including Land Revenue Office, District Development Committee, Municipal Office and Survey Office, has affected the public most.

“The office is open. Employees come everyday, but we do not cater service to the public,” said Kushdhwoj Karki, chief at Land Revenue Office. “How do you expect us to work when we’ve received death threat?”

The district administration has mobilised police to provide security to the government offices, but the employees are not ready to take their chances. “The government has deployed security forces for employees’ security, but we cannot force them to work,” said Chief District Officer Gehanath Bhandari.

Bhandari added preparations are afoot for an all-party meeting to end the existing row.
