KATHMANDU, DEC 26 - Joint Newa Struggle Committee announced a separate Newa autonomous state in the capital on Saturday.
The struggle committee has been formed by those people who were not satisfied with the earlier declaration of Newa autonomous state by the main opposition party UCPN (Maoist).
As part of their third phase of protests against the government, the Maoists on Dec. 16 had declared Newa autonomous state amid a programme in Basantapur, Kathmandu.
The committee, which claims to have support of major parties including UML, UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and 31 different ethnic associations and organisations, announced a separate Newa autonomous state organising a mass gathering at Dasrath Stadium in the capital today.
Saying that the Maoist declaration of Newa autonomous state failed to include them, the committee announced a separate Newa state comprising Kathmandu and neighbouring regions.
Few Maoist central leaders were also present at the programme today.
Also on the occasion, Maoist Vice Chairman Narayan Kazi Shrestha said the declaration of Newa autonomous state had created public pressure for federalism and the republic.
Prior to the declaration, hundreds of people belonging to the Newar community from Kathmandu and neighboring districts took out rallies from different places in the capital and converged into a mass gathering at the Stadium.
Though the committee has not demarcated the territory of the Newa autonomous state, it said that the state would include Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kavre and few regions of Dolakha distrct.
