Maoist cadres continue obstruction in Kailali despite banda withdrawal

KAILALI, DEC 26 - Though the UCPN (Maoist) withdrew the indefinite Kailali banda on Saturday afternoon due to the pressure from government, its cadres said that they will not allow vehicles to ply the roads and the government offices will be shut down.

Protesting against the Dudhejhadi killings, the Maoists imposed the banda, and they  have been obstructing vehicles belonging to the media, Human Rights, and diplomatic centres also.

Meanwhile, the Federation of Nepalese Journalist (FNJ) has decided to boycott the Maoist programmes in the district for not allowing the journalists to use vehicle to cover news during the strike.

Issuing a press statement after an emergency meeting today, the FNJ Kailali Chairman Dirgha Raj Upadhyaya said the FNJ has decided to boycott the Maoist mass assemblies, sit-ins, rallies, formal programmes, among other programmes.

Early today, the businessmen demonstrated in Dhangadhi against the Kailai banda.

The businessmen in support from the Dhangadhi Chapter of Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI) took to streets citing the businesses have been hampered and normal life in the district has been crippled due to the ongoing strike.

The irate businessman took out a rally from the association's office to the custom office at 10 this morning. Though the Maoists had called them to sit for talks today, they refused to refused to do so.

Normal life in the district has been crippled for some weeks due to the banda.

Five squatters and a policeman were killed when security personnel used force while evicting the forest encroached in Dudhejhadi of the district earlier in December.
