Senior leaders, Nemwang busy in parleys

KATHMANDU, DEC 23 - Senior leaders from the major political parties and the Constituent Assembly (CA) chairman are holding consultation to forge consensus on the controversial issues raised in the Constitutional Committee (CC).

UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, CPN-UML chairman Jhalanath Khanal , Nepali Congress vice president Ram Chandra Poudel, chief –whips from these three parties, among other leaders are present at the meeting underway at the office of CA chairman Subash Nemwang in Singhadurbar on Wednesday morning.

Differences lies among the political parties on the issues including the name of the constitution, the preamble, definition of nation and state and the national flag.

The CC has said that controversial issues will be solved by dividing the votes if consensus is not forged today.

The meeting scheduled for Thursday will decide the date for the election, one of the members of the CC informed.

The CC was scheduled to vote on Dec. 15 to finalise its concept paper. But voting was postponed following a formal request from Maoist Vice Chairman Baburam Bhattarai.

The NC and the UML had supported Bhattarai's proposal to postpone voting and make an attempt to reach a consensus by Dec. 24 at the last meeting.
