KATHMANDU, DEC 23 - As the main opposition UCPN (Maoist) intensifies pressure on the incumbent government with the announcement on Tuesday of its fourth phase of agitation, the government is all set to expose Maoist activities to the envoys of the UN Security Council. “The prime minister will brief them on the latest political situation here and the latest status of the peace process and progress made in drafting the new constitution,” Energy Minister Prakash Saran Mahat told the Post.

The Cabinet had decided to expose Maoist acts of coercion, intimidation and actions directed against the spirit of past accords. “The prime

minister will put forth the government’s viewpoint and seek assistance from the international community to build pressure on the Maoists to correct their activities, especially those directed against the spirit of the peace process,” said an aide to the prime minister.

The government has enlisted some Maoist attempts, including declaration of autonomous states, seizure of private and public land and continued attacks on the press and political cadre of other parties. The US, UK, China, France and Russia are the sitting members of the UN Security Council.
