Maoists declare Madhesh Autonomous State
The UCPN (Maoist) concluded its autonomous state declaration programme on Friday by announcing the Madhesh Autonomous State from Janakpur.
Maoist Vice Chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattarai declared the Madhesh Autonomous State amidst a progarmme organised in Janakpur this afternoon. The Maoists began the autonomy declaration from Dec. 11 as part of its third-phase protest programmes demanding 'civilian supremacy'.
The former rebel party had declared the Magart and Tamuwan State from Tansen, the headquarters of Palpa district, and Pokhara in Kaski district respectively on Thursday.
The Maoists had announced to declare autonomous states starting Dec. 11 against the government as part of their ongoing third-phase agitation demanding ‘civilian supremacy’, which they said was breached by the president’s move to reinstate the then Chief of Army Staff (CoAS).
Earlier this year in May, President Dr Ram Baran Yadav had reinstated then CoAS General Rookmangud Katawal, prompting the Maoists to dislodge itself from the eight-month-old government under its leadership.
The UCPN (Maoist), the single largest party in the Constituent Assembly, has been launching its agitating from the street and the parliament.
