MAHOTTARI, DEC 17 - Nepali Congress (NC) acting president Sushil Koirala Thursday underscored the need for unity among the democratic forces to protect democracy and the the hard-earned achievement of the Nepali people.

Inaugurating the district level training camp organised by Nepal Student Union in Jaleshwor today, the NC leader asked the former rebels, the Maoists, to relinquish their pride of arms.

While reminiscing that his party had played an important role in establishing democracy from the time of Ranas to the former Royals, he claimed that no any force could unnerve the NC.

Terming the president's move as an act of preserving democracy and preventing possible confrontations, Koirala said that the move was in regard to the civilian supremacy.

"Had the president not paid heed to the political parties' request, democracy would have fallen into captivity and nation into confrontation" Koirala said.

Elaborating the role that his party played to usher the former rebels from jungle to the Singhadurbar and further save the nation from murder, extortion and violence, he said that the Maoists have, time and again, violated nation's harmony.

"Democracy cannot be saved without peace and harmony," said Koirala, adding, "But the recent acts of the Maoists have increased the chances of confrontation."

He underlined the need for unity in NC to counter the existing problems of the nation and to end the impasse.

He said, "If NC moves forward in unity, it can topple any forces and face the unilateralists."
