KATHMANDU, DEC 13 - President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav on Sunday appealed to former Prime Minister and founder leader of Nepali Congress Krishna Prasad Bhattarai to call the political leaders to come to an agreement and draft the constitution on time. Kishunji, he said, ranks among the "ideal leaders" vis-à-vis Mahatma Ghandi, Jawahar Lal Nehru and Ganesh Man Singh.

The president made the call at a special ceremony organised to celebrate the 86th birthday of Bhattarai at Osho Tapoban, where Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal paid a visit.

Dr. Yadav said a positive message from a respected leader like Bhattarai would go a long way. "I would like to request Bhattarai to give a message to all, including the political parties, to work in tandem to resolve the problems through the Constituent Assembly, draft the constitution on time and institutionalise democracy," said Dr. Yadav. "I find him as a successful leader, who was able to draft the constitution within the given 14-month timeline. Had we been able to implement the constitution (of 1990), we could have found a better way by now."

Bhattarai, however, did not come out frankly. The former prime minister just said he wanted to see all the forces collaborating together for the country's prosperity. Bhattarai has been keeping himself out of the political arena for quite a long time.

Prime Minister Nepal lauded Bhattarai for his ability to resolve political crisis. "Kisunji will continue to remain as a source of inspiration to the lovers of democracy," said Nepal. Appreciating the Osho Tapoban for organising the programme, Nepal said there were some "evil" political leaders, who need to get purged through medication. "I wish Osho Tapoban could also bring the leaders who have evil hearts and minds and purify them."

UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal praised Bhattarai's contribution to the nation and democracy. "His (Bhattarai's) contribution to the making of modern Nepal will continue to inspire this and coming generations," said Dahal. "He is a living history, an ideal leader, and in my entire political career I have taken him as source of information." Swami Anand Arun of Osho Tapoban, former Prime Ministers Surya Bahadur Thapa, Lokendra Bahadur Chand, NC Acting President Sushil Koirala were the other speakers at the programme.
