Maoists withdraw Wednesday strike

KATHMANDU, DEC 08 - Bowing down to pressure from various quarters, UCPN (Maoist) on Tuesday decided to withdraw its programme of general strike for Wednesday.

Co-ordinator of the United National People’s Movement Dr. Baburam Bhattarai issued a press release and urged the sister wings of the Maoist to back out of the strike.

Earlier today, the party said that it withdrew the transportation strike only taking into account the public appeal as general convention on human rights is scheduled to convene in the capital and wedding ceremonies are being organised across the country on Wednesday. Later, the plans for shutting down industries and educational institutes were also withdrawn.

The Maoists had called a general shutdown as part of their third-phase protest against the government.

They have been launching protests after they stepped down from the government over the army chief row with the president. They have demanded rectification of the president’s move to reinstate the then army chief sacked by their government, and ‘re-establishment of the civilian supremacy’.
