HIV infections on rise in Bhutanese refugee camps

No refugee had diagnosed HIV virus few years ago.

KAKARBHITTA, DEC 04 - The number of HIV infections in both men and women due to unsafe sex is rising inside Bhutanese refugee camps here.

According to AMDA-Nepal, an organisation taking care of refugees' health, 15 refugees are HIV infected inside the Kakarbhitta-based camps. No refugee had diagnosed HIV virus few years ago.

Unprotected sex has contributed to the spread of HIV, as refugees commonly practice sex without condom, AMDA said.

With the rise in HIV infection, awareness programmes are being run on the initiation of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Trainings are also being provided at the schools where children of Bhutanese refugee study. 

All camps are now equipped with HIV virus testing centers, said Dr. Nirmal Rimal, director of AMDA-Nepal.
