Police involved in looting

KATHMANDU, DEC 04 - A policeman claiming to be a cadre of the UCPN (Maoist) party, thrashed and looted a local at Duwakot in the Bhaktapur district on Wednesday.

According to Balaram Bista, Inspector at Metropolitan Police Circle, Thimi, a police personnel named Ramchandra Bhandari, beat up and looted local Ramesh Deuja, who was on his way from Chittapole to meet his relatives in Duwakot for Dewali festival.

Bhandari asked for a lift on Deuja’s motorcycle and later thrashed Deuja with his own helmet and looted him. According to a case registered by Deuja at the police office, Bhandari looted Rs. 97,800 from him. Following a search of Bhandari’s house, however, only Rs. 16,000 were recovered. During police interrogation, Bhandari similarly confessed to the theft, but claimed that he had only stolen Rs. 16,000.
