‘Stop using children for political purpose’
KATHMANDU, DEC 03 - Save the Children has expressed its concern on the repeated use of children for political purposes in Nepal, and drawn the attention of the Constituent Assembly members to such violation of rights.
“We strongly believe that the use of children during/for mass political assemblies to forward political agendas is wrong and is against the principles and values of the Convention on the Rights of the Child 1989 to which Nepal is a state party,” said the child rights organisation in a press statement on Thursday.
It further appealed the political parties not to interfere in school education and respect children’s right to protection from abuse and exploitation.
“Save the Children would like to appeal to the political class, civil society and all duty bearers to advocate for provisions in the new constitution that will uphold and promote the rights of children in Nepal including the prohibition on the use and misuse of children for political purposes,” said Country Director of Save the Children’s Nepal Country Programme Brian J. Hunter
Moreover, Save the Children has appealed to the political establishment, the government, the CA members and the Fundamental Rights Committee to engage children in the constitution drafting process on subject matters that relate to them in keeping with their age and maturity.
