Maoist autonomy agenda worries Prez
KATHMANDU, DEC 02 - President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav has expressed serious concern over the main opposition UCPN (Maoist) announcement of declaration of autonomous regions. He has asked Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to act in time to prevent an unwanted situation.
“The president is seriously concerned over the decision to set up autonomous regions, “Rajendra Dahal, press adviser to the president said.
There is a panel to look into issues of state restructuring in the Constituent Assembly. If any party takes unilateral decision on the issue, it will invite trouble for the go-vernment and later the entire nation will suffer, the president said.
“If you sense any trouble, I can assist you in this regard, however, we have to maintain ethnic harmony,” the president told the prime minister.
The president also raised the same concern when he met Maoist Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha on Monday. Shrestha said the decision to set up autonomous regions was only symbolic and would not materialise.
“Such declarations could harm national integrity, regio-nal unity, and social harmony”, the president added. “Political leadership should be sensitive towards such moves.”
The president also cautioned that the country’s priority at the moment was not the Climate Change Summit and Cabinet meeting at Everest base camp. “Seeking an alternative way to end the ongoing stalemate should be the government’s focus, nothing else,” Dahal quoted the president.
The prime minister blamed the Maoist party for creating obstacles in ending the current impasses. “We are exhibiting maximum flexibility but the Maoists are not serious,” the prime minister’s adviser said after the meeting.
I am ready to assist political parties for a concrete result, the president told the prime minister. The president also apprised the prime minister of his meeting with Maoist Chairman Puspha Kamal Dahal and Shrestha.
