KATHMANDU, DEC 01 - Prime Minister, Madhav Kumar Nepal visited the office of the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) to discuss its ongoing activities and strategies, on Monday.

According to an official, the prime minister also visited the Central Zoo in Jawalakhel and instructed NTNC authorities to speed up the construction of the new zoo in Suryavinayak in Bhaktapur, during his visit. “Prime Minister Nepal stated his willingness to provide support and necessary assistance for the construction of the new zoo, as well as his support for other programmes undertaken by the NTNC,” said Juddha Bahadur Gurung, general secretary of the NTNC, on Monday.

Sarita Gynwali, project manager at the Central Zoo, said, “There is a need for a master plan for central zoo which has not been formulated as of yet.”  According Gyawali, the zoo is facing a financial problem, among others, in the launching of its new programmes for more effective management, “The total income source of the zoo is only enough for the maintenance of daily zoo activities. There isn’t enough money to conduct new programmes, such as awareness and outreach programmes.”

The Central Zoo in Jawalakhel is the only zoo in the country. The government is planning to shift the zoo to a larger location in Suryabinayak to provide more space for the animals.
