Sharma recommended for new Chief Justice
KATHMANDU, NOV 30 - The Constitutional Council (CC) on Monday unanimously recommended Senor Justice Anup Raj Sharma for the post of Chief Justice.
The meeting held at Singha Durbar this morning decided to forward Sharma’s name to the Parliamentary Hearing Committee.
The tenure of current Chief Justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhi is due to expire on December 12.
However, Chairman of the main opposition party UCPN (Maoist), Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ did not turn up for the meeting.
It has been learnt that Prime Minister and CC Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal took Dahal’s consent for the decision by telephone this morning. Today’s CC meeting finally took the decision after Dahal, who is one of the ex-officio members, did not show up for the third consecutive time.
However, the CC has yet to recommend the names to head other constitutional bodies including Public Service Commission, Election Commission, Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) and Office of the Auditor General.
The CC meeting has been held after a long break.
