KATHMANDU, NOV 30 - The government will discuss climate change and global warming issues at the historic Cabinet meeting to be held at Kalapathar (5,250 metres above the sea level) on Dec. 4, said officials on Sunday. Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal will later present the conclusions of the meeting at the UN’s Framework on Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC) scheduled from Dec. 7-18  in Copenhagen.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Minister for Environment Thakur Prasad Sharma said the meeting would be symbolic as it would discuss the impacts of climate change on Himalayan glaciers and draw international attention towards helping the communities rendered vulnerable due to glacial-melt.

“The conclusions of the meeting will later be a part of the prime minister’s three-minute speech on the country’s status paper on climate change at Copenhagen,” the minister said.

Twenty-seven ministers will attend the meeting at Kalapathar on Friday. “The country’s status paper on climate change and global warming will be the main agenda,” Sharma said. The conclusions of the Cabinet meeting will later be

publicised at Syangboche on the same day.

According to  Minister for Forest and Soil Conservation Deepak Bohora, government delegates and representatives of other organisations, who are attending the meeting, will first undergo medical examination and only the physically fit will be allowed to the base camp.

Four helicopters, including two from Nepal Army and two from Fishtail Air, will be kept on standby in case of emergency throughout the meeting, he said. The estimated cost of the meeting is around Rs. 6 million, according to Bohora.

The government’s decision to hold the Kalapathar Cabinet meet comes just ahead of the long-awaited UNFCC’s Copenhagen meet commencing next week where the government aims to highlight the plight of Himalayan glaciers and the impacts on dependent global communities.
